Puzzle News This Week: Block Pushers, No-Guess Logic and Daily Hints
It is the middle of October, and the puzzle world is busy. A big new puzzle game just came out. A small daily logic game keeps growing. And many people still start the day with a word puzzle and a quick look at the hints.
Here is what puzzle fans are talking about this week, in plain words. For each trend, we also point you to a free game on SepoGames that gives you the same kind of fun. No download, no sign-up.
A huge new block-pushing game is here
The biggest puzzle release of the month is Order of the Sinking Star. It came out on 8 October 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Windows. It is the third game directed by Jonathan Blow, the designer behind Braid and The Witness.
The game is built around pushing blocks around small boards. Reviewers call this style "Sokoban-style", named after a classic box-pushing puzzle. The trailer promised more than 1,000 puzzles. Critics like it a lot. Metacritic lists it as "generally favorable", with scores between 83 and 86 depending on the platform.
Reviewers also say it is hard. Nintendo Life gave it 8 out of 10 but asked if it is "too hard to have broad appeal". CogConnected gave it 88 and praised the "countless well-designed puzzles", but warned that it "gets very challenging".
One thing both reviews liked: you can undo a move or reset a level at any time. That is a good lesson for any puzzle. Mistakes should be cheap. Try something, look at what happens, and go back.
"No guessing" logic puzzles keep growing
Another quiet hit is Clues by Sam, a free daily browser puzzle from a small Finnish studio. You see 20 suspects in a 4×5 grid. Some are innocent, some are criminals. Each clue helps you work out at least one more person.
The fun part is the rule behind it: the game will not let you guess. You can only mark a suspect when the logic is certain. According to its Wikipedia page, it passed 50,000 daily players in early 2026, mostly through people sharing it with friends.
We think this says something about what people want. Many players are tired of luck. They want a puzzle where every step can be proven. That is exactly how good logic puzzles work.
Daily word games and the "hint ladder"
Daily word games are still a habit for many people. Today, 16 October, is Connections puzzle number 1223. In that game you get 16 words and must sort them into four groups of four. You can make four mistakes before the game ends.
Look at how big tech and news sites now write their daily hint pages. TechRadar, for example, does not give the answer at once. It uses steps: first a small clue for each group, then the group names, and only at the end the full answer. You can stop as soon as you have enough help.
This "hint ladder" is a smart way to play any puzzle. Ask for the smallest nudge first. You still get the good feeling of solving it yourself.
Small puzzle games for your phone
Pocket Gamer's list of new mobile games for 15 October has two puzzle games out of five. Walk the Frog is a drag-and-drop puzzle where you move parts of a drawn world to help a frog get home. Oh Snack! is a physics puzzler set in a kitchen.
Both fit a pattern we see again and again: short levels that you can play in a few minutes, on the bus or during a break. People want puzzles that fit into small gaps in the day.
Coming soon: a new Professor Layton
Fans of story puzzles have a date to remember. Professor Layton and the New World of Steam from Level-5 is set for 10 December 2026. It will come to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Windows. Wikipedia notes it will be the first Layton game on PlayStation 5 and PC. Until then, riddle fans can warm up with smaller logic games.
