Word Hunt — free online word search puzzles

Ten hidden words in a grid of letters, running in every direction — across, down, backwards and diagonally. Pick a theme, drag across the letters and cross them all off. Six themes to work through: animals, food, nature, sports, travel and space. Free, no download, and it works with one finger on a phone.

How to play

1. Pick a theme, then tap Start puzzle.
2. Drag your finger across the letters of a word in a straight line.
3. Let go — if it matches a word from the list it locks in with its own colour.
4. Words can run in any of the eight directions, including backwards.
5. Three hints are available if a word will not show itself.

Tips

• Look for unusual letters first. J, Q, X and Z narrow things down fast.
• Scan the diagonals last — most people find the straight ones quickly and get stuck on the slanted ones.
• Read the word list before you start. You find words much faster when you know what shape to look for.
• Each theme keeps its own best time, so replay one you know to beat your record.
