Word Hunt Free Online – Word Search Puzzles

Word Hunt is a free online word search. Ten words hide in a grid of letters – across, down, backwards and diagonally. Pick a theme, drag across the letters and cross every word off the list. No download, and it works with one finger on a phone.

What is a word search?

A word search is a grid of random-looking letters with real words hidden inside. You get the list of words; your job is to find where each one is. Each new puzzle in Word Hunt is created fresh, so you never get the same grid twice.

Word Hunt rules

• Ten words from your theme are hidden in an 11×11 grid.
• Words always run in a straight line: across, down or diagonal.
• They can run in any of the 8 directions – also backwards and upwards.
• Words may share letters where they cross.
• Find all ten words to finish the puzzle. Your time is your score.

How to use the buttons

• Pick a theme on the start screen: Animals, Food, Nature, Sports, Travel or Space.
• Drag from the first to the last letter of a word, then let go. A correct word lights up in its own colour.
• Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found yet (3 per puzzle).
• New puzzle makes a fresh grid with the same theme.

What word search does for your mind

• Visual scanning: you train your eyes to search a busy grid quickly and in order.
• Focus: you hold a word in your head while you look for it.
• Spelling and vocabulary: you see each word letter by letter – great for children and for English learners.
• Pattern spotting: rare letters and double letters jump out once you know to look for them.
• Patience: the last two words are always the hardest.
• A calm break: no opponent, no pressure – just you and the grid.

What science says, honestly. We know of no study on word search puzzles alone. A large study by the University of Exeter and King's College London (2019, more than 19,000 people aged 50 and over) found that people who did word and number puzzles more often scored better on tests of attention, reasoning and memory. This is a link, not proof – the researchers said they cannot say puzzles reduce the risk of dementia.

Tips to find words faster

1. Read the list first. Knowing the words before you search makes them pop out.
2. Hunt for rare letters. Q, X, Z, J and K are rare, so a word with one is easy to locate.
3. Look for double letters. “OTTER”, “COCONUT”, “BUTTER” – a pair like TT stands out.
4. Scan row by row. Move your eyes along each line for the first letter instead of looking everywhere at once.
5. Check backwards and diagonals last. Most people find the straight words fast and get stuck on the slanted ones.
6. Start long. Long words take more space and are easier to see than short ones.
7. Save hints for the very last word.

A short history of the word search

The word search as most people know it was published by Norman E. Gibat in the Selenby Digest in Norman, Oklahoma, on 1 March 1968. In Spain, puzzle maker Pedro Ocón de Oro was already publishing similar “sopas de letras” (letter soups) before that. The puzzle is also called WordFind, word seek or word sleuth.

Fun fact: in the 1970s the American TV game show Now You See It was built around a giant word search. Today teachers still use word searches in language classes, and computer scientists use them to explain search algorithms.
