Domino Puzzles Are Trending: Puzzle News for Week 43, 2026
Domino puzzles are one of the hottest daily puzzle types right now. You don't need words or general knowledge β just a few dominoes, a small board and some calm logic. This week we look at why the domino puzzle trend keeps growing, which new puzzle games are worth a look, and where you can play a free domino puzzle today without any download.
Why domino puzzles are everywhere right now
The big push came from The New York Times. Its domino logic game Pips launched on Monday, 18 August 2025, on the web and on iOS and Android. Like Wordle, it is a daily puzzle. You can play Easy, Medium and Hard on the same day, a timer runs while you play, and you can share a coloured result with your time.
More than a year later, it is still part of the daily routine for many players. Big tech sites such as Tom's Guide still publish daily hints for it in October 2026, next to Wordle, Connections and Strands. That tells you something: people search for help with domino puzzles every single day.
The idea is simple. You place dominoes on a board with coloured zones. Each zone has a condition β the pips add up to a number, all pips are equal, all are different, or the total is above or below a value. You must use every domino and fill every square.

Steam Next Fest: puzzle demos to try this week
If you play on PC, this is a good week. Steam Next Fest runs from 19 to 26 October 2026, and hundreds of free demos are live. Puzzle site The Nerdy Type picked ten puzzle demos on 18 October. A few that fit brain-game fans:
- Sudokiller β a murder mystery where you place suspects in a crime-scene grid, a bit like a logic grid puzzle.
- Unclouded β a Minesweeper-style game with resource management.
- Cubic Color Confusion β moving coloured blocks changes the colours of the grid and can block other paths.
- Flight Date β route travellers on a budget with as few flights as possible.
Demos are free, but they disappear when the festival ends, so try them this week.
A huge puzzle game just launched
The biggest puzzle release of the month is Order of the Sinking Star, from Thekla, the studio of Jonathan Blow (known for Braid and The Witness). It came out on 8 October 2026 for Windows, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. The reveal trailer promised more than 1,000 puzzles, and Blow has said there are over 1,400. Edge magazine even compared the size of its map to Elden Ring. It is a paid game, but it shows how strong the appetite for "pure thinking" games is right now.
Domino history in 60 seconds
Dominoes are much older than any app. The earliest known written mention comes from Song dynasty China, in a 13th-century text by Zhou Mi about Hangzhou. The modern European domino appeared in France in the mid-18th century. A classic "double-six" set has 28 tiles. And the name? It probably comes from a carnival costume β a black hooded robe with a white mask worn at the Venetian Carnival.
Are domino puzzles good for your brain?
A domino puzzle makes you add small numbers, split totals into parts and plan a move or two ahead, because one domino often touches two zones. That is real practice in logic and focus.
What about science? A 2019 study from the University of Exeter and King's College London looked at about 19,000 healthy adults aged 50 to 93. Those who did word or number puzzles more often scored better on tests of attention, reasoning and memory. But it showed a link, not cause and effect β the researchers said they could not claim puzzles reduce the risk of dementia. Our honest take: play because it is fun and relaxing. We wrote more about this in Gehirnjogging β die Wahrheit.
