Word Search FAQ: 9 Common Questions Answered

Word searches are one of the oldest and friendliest puzzles around. You find them in newspapers, school worksheets and puzzle books. And today, of course, on your phone.

Below are short, clear answers to the questions people ask most often about word searches. If you want to try one right away, play Word Hunt for free.

What is a word search puzzle?

A word search is a grid of letters with words hidden inside it. You get a list of words to find. Each word sits in a straight line in the grid. When you find one, you mark it and move on to the next.

Who invented the word search?

Most sources name Norman E. Gibat from Norman, Oklahoma. He published a word search in the Selenby Digest on 1 March 1968. Some people say similar puzzles existed earlier, for example the Spanish “sopa de letras”, but that is less clear.

Can words go backwards or diagonally?

Yes, in most puzzles. Words can run across, down, up, backwards and on all four diagonals. That makes eight directions in total. In our game Word Hunt, all eight directions are used.

What is the fastest way to solve a word search?

Look for rare letters first, like Q, X, Z, J or K. They appear only a few times, so they lead you to a word quickly. Then check the eight letters around it for the second letter. Double letters, like LL or OO, are also easy to spot.

Should I search row by row or word by word?

Both work. Word by word is best for beginners: pick a word, find its first letter, then check around it. Row by row works well for long lists: read each line slowly and tick off every word you notice on the way.

Are word searches good for your brain?

Word searches are a calm way to practise focus, pattern spotting and spelling. Teachers often use them in language classes for this reason. But they are a hobby, not a medical treatment. Play them because you enjoy them.

Are word searches good for learning a language?

They can help you remember how new words are spelled, because you look at every letter. For real meaning and grammar, combine them with example sentences. Our Word Bridge game shows every word inside a full sentence, in ten languages.

What are other names for word search?

You may see it called word find, word seek, word sleuth, mystery word or WonderWord. In Spanish it is “sopa de letras” (letter soup), and in German it is often called “Buchstabensalat” or “Suchsel”.
